offered to DomainMasters clients. It is a combination of software and
human
manpower that has been a behind the scenes savior of our clients
servers
since 1997. Many of the items that AlaGuard manages would take
precious hours
out of your day if you had to deal with them yourself or be very
expensive
when handed over to an employee. Some issues could take hours or days
to
rectify.

AlaGuard is comprised of 3 main programs. All run separately of

Proactive
PortStarter
Your server “talks” to the outside world via ports. These ports are
the only
way in and out of your server, so they are an extremely integral part
of your
online presence. AlaGuard monitors these ports, checking to make sure
they
are available to you, your end-users, and any legitimate outside
consumer.
This port monitoring is constant. If any port is closed, the Proactive
PortStarter follows an algorithm to decide exactly why the port is
closed. It
automatically takes proactive steps to stabilize the box and reset the
ports.
The algorithm is so smart that it knows when it is in over its head
and when
to send the diagnosis to a support person to intervene. ProActive
PortStarter
can monitor any ports that you need monitored. The following ports are

default as they are crucial to your day to day operations and are
monitored

Stabilizer
This application will monitor all processes running on your server and
react
accordingly, so as to keep your server running efficiently and
securely. It
will find runaway processes, which could potentially “lock up” your
server,
and kill those processes. It will monitor CPU time, hack attempts are
located
and killed, it will find scripts that may be harmful to your server’s
operations, and is also able to reboot the server if necessary.
AlaGuard also includes anti-spam tools that help alleviate the hassles
of
fighting these unwanted emails. AlaGuard will scan and locate known
spamware
that may be running on your system, it will find CGI scripts that
contribute
to the spam dilemma, and can even find spamming tools embedded in
html!
Server
Updates
Nothing keeps your server more stable and secure than keeping the
software
and Operating System up to date. In the AlaGuard program, engineers
work
diligently to assess the stability of new software releases and
security
patches. Frequently, senior staff compiles their own patches and
enhancements
to open source software. These enhancements are tested by our team of
seven
Quality Control Engineers on the DomainMasters test network.
After being fully tested and qualified, new software releases and
patches are
installed on any server in the AlaGuard program.

In addition, DomainMasters proactively monitors the servers housing
our
clients' web sites to ensure optimal performance. Remember, system

DomainMasters has built system monitoring scripts into the operating
system
of each server on the network. These scripts are designed to monitor,
report
and fix various system processes according to a regiment of criteria.
With
the direction of the DomainMasters data center staff, operating a
secure,
stable and reliable web server has never been easier.
The following
describes some of the monitors and the back-up procedures that proactively are performed on your server:
Automated Machine Uptime Monitor
DomainMasters operates scripts that ping the servers every few minutes
to
make sure that each server is accessible from within and outside our
network.
If the server cannot be pinged, the script pages our system engineers
immediately for rapid correction.
Automated Web Serving Monitor
Our tools monitor the Apache web server to ensure that it is up and
serving
pages. Every two minutes, we send a test page to the http daemon. If
it does
not respond, our script will reload the daemon. Then two minutes
later, it
will send a test page again. If there is still no response, then the
reload/test scenario repeats itself. After two attempts, a technician
is
contacted to take the remedial steps needed to make sure that servers
are
fully operational.
Automated Disk Space Monitor
DomainMasters system automatically monitors disk space usage through a
script
that checks the free space on your hard drive. If your available hard
drive
space reaches a dangerously low level, you and our data center staff
are
notified via e-mail. This is to make sure that your drive never fills
up and
brings your server down.
Automated Memory Monitor
This monitor makes sure that no process takes up more than a certain
percentage of your available memory. If a process consumes more than
the
maximum allotment, it is temporarily killed off and the situation is
reported
to our data center staff. This is especially helpful when hosting high
volume
virtual domains.
Automated Port Monitor
DomainMasters actively monitors all commonly used ports to make sure
that
they are open and to verify that they are actually passing data. The
script
does this by requesting data. If the port does not respond, it is
restarted
by the monitoring tool.
Automated External Monitor
All of our servers and our network are monitored externally. In
addition to
the internal scripts described above, we use off-network servers to
provide
corrective action, notification and coverage for maximum protection of
service delivery. Using these off-site machines gives us the ultimate
guarantee that we can provide the uptime and reliability promised to
our
clients.
Automated Back-up
DomainMasters executes server-wide system backups to allow us to
recover a
server in the event of a failure (hardware, user or software related).
